The book inc Scholarship Fund empowers writers to realize the artistic and commercial potential of their work, whatever their background and resources. Since our start in 2020, we’ve awarded over 30 full and partial scholarships, thanks to our generous supporters.
Make a One-Time Contribution
Join us in our mission to support more memoir and novel writers by donating to the book inc Scholarship Fund.
100% of your contribution will go to scholarships for deserving writers to participate in our programs.
- $1,500 will sponsor a writer for the yearlong Memoir or Novel Incubator.
- $875 will sponsor a writer for the Book Revision Lab.
- Other amounts will support full and partial scholarships to the range of our programs.

Honor Your Loved One or Mentor Through A Named Scholarship
For a yearly donation of $500 or more, you can dedicate a named scholarship to honor someone who made a big impact on your life, while actively helping deserving writers achieve literary success. See below for our inaugural named scholarship, The Helen Whalen Scholarship.
To inquire about setting up a named scholarship to honor your loved one or mentor, email bookinc@projectwritenow.org. All of our operational expenses are funded by program fees, so you can trust that 100% of your donation goes directly to our writers.
The Helen Whalen Scholarship
The Helen Whalen Scholarship honors Helen Whalen (née Dobroslavich), a writer and family historian whose work centered on the local history of Bergen County, New Jersey.
The beloved matriarch of a family consisting of seven children, 16 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren, Helen meticulously researched and filled out the branches of her family tree, uncovering lost stories, cherished memories, and thousands of photographs. In 2010, after a successful career at Kodak, Helen co-authored and edited her first book, History of River Vale. In 2023, Helen passed away on her 94th birthday, just as she was putting the finishing touches on her second book, Did You Know? Stories and History of Our Hometown of Westwood.
In honor of her memory, the scholarship will annually support one writer accepted into the book inc Memoir Incubator.

THE SANKOFA SCHOLARSHIP
book inc acknowledges the need for more representation in publishing and seeks to support underrepresented writers in their work.
Our Sankofa Scholarship supports black women writing memoir. Memoirs involve making sense of the past to direct the present, and they can be a witness and record of marginalized lives.
Black women make up a large community of the historically silenced. Published memoirs by black women make up a tiny fraction of all memoirs published –evidence of the continued centering of white authors in the industry.
This scholarship acknowledges the need for stories written by black women in the publishing world to create a more representative literary archive. Black women’s stories, told in their own voices, can serve as a site of historical and cultural repair in our country.

Our goal is to provide talented, deserving writers with the support, community, and guidance to draft and revise their memoirs and novels, helping them realize the potential of their work. We offer full and partial scholarships to all our programs.
